Independendent artists stories come first in music industry podcast Gritty Birds.
Before I started working in podcasting, I was an artist and show promoter. In 2013 I put out my first EP and found myself with a 7 piece band and many many questions.
I started the podcast as a way to ask questions. With a journalistic ear, it was quickly turned into a narrative podcast, broadcasted through Portland’s Independent radio station XRAY.FM.
Gritty Birds continues to experiment with different styles of podcasting while continuing to tell artists stories. Episodes usually release as long form short series.
Most Recent Podcast
Recently I’ve been experimenting with different formats through short seasons of the podcast. You can take a listen below to hear my interview at the 2020 NAMM Music Trade show, where I partnered with RME Audio to record 25 artists and producers about their process. This episode included Seattle beatmaker and MC Sassys Black’s second time on the show.
Festival Season podcasts
Many of my shows were recorded on site at music festivals.
You can listen to one of my favorite series, a 3 parter from Pickathon 2017, featuring artists including Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Ezra Furman, Protomatry and more. This is the first of this series.
Narrative Music Industry Podcast
Narrative storytelling is a huge focus of the show. Here are three episodes that are favorites
This one that again weaved several interviews together, featuring field interviews from Pickathon and Treefort Music Festivals as well as a recording from my homes studio with Wild Ones.
Long form narrative has also been used with the podcast. Check out this episode, one of our most popular, with audio engineer and founder of Tape Op Magazine, Larry Crane. This was recorded with a double ender while I was traveling. We spoke about Elliott Smith, who was a long time collaborator with Crane.
This episode with LA via Seattle pop artist Maiah Manser was recorded in studio at XRay.FM. Maiah and I spoke about trauma and growth after the release of her music video and record that year.
